Building Healthy Organizations

UCSF, Center for Healthcare Professions

Overview

For over ten years, the Center for Health Care Professions (CHCF) at the University of California at San Francisco ran a successful fellowship program, training health care professionals throughout California in leadership development and organizational skills. Each fellow received a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®) leadership assessment. However, feedback from the fellows indicated that they wanted a more culturally-based leadership model. CHCF had struggled with finding a model, until they found The Five Elements.

Solution

CHCF contracted with Kahakulei Institute to present their Five Elements curriculum.  We provided a four-hour session focused on building individual leadership capacity in the spring, followed by a four-hour session focused on building institutional capacity in the fall.  During the inter-session each fellow received one-on-one consultation and coaching on their Five Elements Leadership Profile.

Outcome

The Kahakulei Institute provided Five Elements assessments to over 500 fellows. The fellows’ evaluations on Kevin’s knowledge of the topic and presentation effectiveness averaged 4.85 (out of 5.00). A number of fellows have gone on to take leading roles in their organizations, and consider Kevin as a mentor and guiding force in the field.

I have received many leadership assessments over the years, and I wondered what new information I would gather. I was extremely pleased to see how Kevin provided a unique approach through The Five Elements. My assessment was informative, thought-provoking, and applicable, and I appreciated that Kevin didn’t focus heavily on the notion of stereotypes and generalizations. The Five Elements even provided some guidance on how I can deal with my two teenagers
